Lock Up Your BMW – The Arsonists are Coming
They strike in the night, on an almost daily basis – anti-gentrification protesters in Berlin, who aren’t exactly cool with the idea of peaceful protesting. How to they fight? Car fires. Car-arsonists are torching luxury automobiles in gentrified neighborhoods throughout Berlin, roasting Mercedes, Porsche’s and BMW vehicles. When the police and firefighters show up – no arsonist is seen, and the car is a wreck.
During the past six months, more than 170 cars have been destroyed by fire in Berlin and police confirm conservatively that 93 were politically motivated attacks.
The “helpful” website – Burning Cars of Berlin – shows a Google Map of car fires believed to be connected with these protests. The arsons are located mostly in clusters of ”richer” areas, such as suburbs and gentrified neighborhoods. Fire starters use slow burning fuses, set in the dead of night, leaving them plenty of time to run off before the vehicle ignites. ”It is very difficult to get evidence. The fire can be started underneath a car but the person that did it can be many streets away when it is alight,” said one witness.
